Just before we pioneered KVFC a wise person told us, "Remember ... as you start the church—don't build a 'monument,' build a 'movement'!"
What great advice!
A monument is pretty ... it speaks of history ... a memorial ... something that was ... static ... impressive to man.
A movement is dynamic ... it speaks of purpose ... eternal activity ... something that is and is to be ... kinetic ... impressive to Jesus.
My husband and I, we never planned to be pastors, to start a church, to be known as "Rev's". This was totally NOT on our radar screen; not something we dreamed of, not something we desired and if fact, both of us had already come up with a pretty good plan for our lives.
Jeff was a very successful businessman well on his way to becoming a multi-millionaire, and I was getting my bachelor's degree with plans to go to dental school. Our plan was to build our own personal monuments ... success, wealth, good citizens, nice family ... the all-American dream. Until ...
God interrupted our lives with a very important message ... "I have called you to serve my purposes in full time ministry ..." which we eventually discovered was to be in pioneering a church ... a movement!
We love it. We love the thrill of being God's entrepreneurs and hooking up with the Lord's innovative, strategic plans for reaching people. We love everything about His Church and influencing a family, a city, a region for Jesus Christ! We love it.
Monuments are boring.
Movements are exciting.
Don't ever settle for a church life that is monument-like-impressive to men, but dullsville to God. Don't become an empty, zombied, churchified, statuesque Christian. Wake up! Get with God's program and find a Jesus-focused, seeker-sensitive, believer-motivated movement!
Jesus said, "I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18, KJV)
