Don't get in the trap of being "letter of the law" or "legalistic" or "dogmatic" on the pathway God leads you to follow for health and healing. Do be dogmatic on Who your trust is in! If you see your doctor, take medicine or have surgery—do so with your trust in God as your ultimate Healer and Great Physician. If you choose not to pursue the medical or surgical route—do so with your trust in God as your ultimate Healer and Great Physician. Again, the issue is trust and being led by the Spirit.
Here's a caveat ...
Don't be "hyperspiritual" and just presume when it comes to health and healing. The healing power of God has been provided for us through Jesus Christ and it is released in our lives by faitb in His Word. His Word is medicine to all our flesh. To receive healing by faith, requires a commitment on your part to stay in the Word 24/7 so that God's medicine can work in your body. If you are not willing to feed on and believe the Word, listen to faith-building tapes, confess the Word in your life even when symptoms are screaming at you—then you are not in a position to receive your healing by faith. "Faith-healing" is not tinker-bell dust. Those who received healing by faith under Jesus ministry were those who had spend time "hearing" before they were "healed."
Don't be "naturally presumpteous" and just assume your doctor is perfect in his diagnosis and care. He's human. This is where you want to be led by the Spirit to the right doctor, ask the right questions, pay attention to the right things and at the same time rest in God's care. Here are some classic reasons our trust is in God and we are not to give carte blanche to doctors. Our trust needs to be in the Lord first and foremost and then we must be led by the Spirit as we seek the best possible medical help.
I am sure the gal who had a double mascectomy only to find out her doctors were wrong because she didn't have breast cancer wishes she would not have followed her doctors advice! Again, the verses in 2 Chronicles 16:12-13,
"In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the LORD, but only from the physicians. Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died ..."
In developed nations, obviously you have a better chance for quality medical care, but for those in 3rd world countries where the witch doctor is the chief nurse, doctor and surgeon, it's even more important that their trust is in Jesus as their Healer.
One final thing concerning the balance between medicine and faith healing. While we absolutely believe that Jesus is our Healer and we've experienced His divine healing power in our lives. We understand that not every Christian walks in divine healing. As I said, in our own lives, we have experienced God's health and healing power many times by using our faith in God's Word—and by and large our family has been healthy ... but at the same time there have been many times that we've gone to our doctor and taken advantage of the innovation God has given to medical science—we've endeavored to be led by the Spirit by first seeking God and His healing power and wisdom and we've taken antibiotics and pain medicine, surgery, etc. when we need it.
During labor and delivery, I loved epidurals and thank God for that innovation! So ... God gets the praise for medical innovation and divine healing! For those who face issues and sicknesses, the doctors and medical science cannot help with, I am so glad that God's healing power is still for today! I am so glad that He's full of mercy and that He's given us His Word and His promises that we can lay hold of by faith. I am so glad that with God "all things are possible."
