Have You Lost Your Song?

Have You Lost Your Song?

Have you lost your song? For the past several months it seems the Lord has continually encouraged me, “Don’t lose your song!” You know the drill – life happens, uncertainties exist, things don’t always go our way and any number of things comes against us to take away our song. Have you quit singing?

It’s interesting, the power of your song! The Bible is loaded with commands to “sing and shout,” “sing a new song,” “sing and make melodies from your heart....” The question is: Have you lost your song? A song is often our internal joy thermometer, our peace gauge, our hope and faith indicator. Seems so simple, doesn’t it?

I can hear some of you, “Yeah, sure...my life is a mess. My husband lost his job. The doctor just gave me a bad report. My oldest kid’s a drug addict. I’m an anxious, nervous wreck and you say: Sing sista! OK, ‘Mary had a little lamb...’ Now, will you leave me alone?”

Listen, if Stella could get her groove back, you can get your song back! Too many of us have settled for singing a dirge. Many of us grew up in the era of sad songs, “When Will I Be Loved?” Linda sang it. “Like a Sad Song,” thank you John Denver. “Killing Me Softly,” Roberta reminded us. “It’s Too Late” Carole King, “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” Bonnie Raitt and “Lonely People,” by the Beatles just confirmed our sad, lonely life. Maybe it’s time to take a break from singing the blues?

What’s your happy song? Get one! Just how powerful can a song be? If you sing a little ditty from your heart for about 30 days in a row, whether you feel like it or not, you can jolt your life right out of a depression. If you sing praises from your heart like the Apostle Paul and Silas did while imprisoned, your song can bust some chains and cause an earthquake that sets you free. Check out Acts 16. Who knows...you could twist and shout about God’s goodness and crumble some walls - got any walls, girls? Think Jericho.

I love the fact that the Bible says that God surrounds us with “songs of deliverance” (Psalm 32:7). Think about that for about a decade. You need deliverance? Sing, girl! Ever prayed, “Oh God, just deliver me from this, will ya?” Well...sing your way out! Open your mouth and start singing what you know to be true about God, His reality, His forgiveness and His intentions toward you. Sing the outcome you desire. You’ll be surprised by what comes out.

News flash...the joy of the Lord is your strength! For real. So, bust out with a song, would you? Get in your car and start singing. Make up a song from your heart to God’s heart and just see what happens. Make a joyful noise - if need be.

We all have our days. We all hear bad news. We all have to overcome the negative gravity of the world around us. We all have challenging people to love. So, why not freak out the people around you and start singing a happy song. When you least feel like it, is when you most need to do it. I dare you to sing!

Amen! I just said the very same things to one of my friends. Do as David did, unashamedly; sing, dance and shout to the Lord!! His joy is our strength. Glad to know I was on it!
