So, our son Luke is 15, has his driver's permit and desperately wants his license. We let him drive part of the way to Florida — from Michigan — over Christmas break. He took the wheel on I-75, on the "just before Atlanta" stretch. I started to speak in tongues! Let's just say Luke got tired of hearing, "Slow down honey ... pay attention to your surroundings ... stay in your lane ... don't just watch the car in front of you ... you're drifting toward that semi ... see the brake lights? The car in front of you is slowing down ... stay in your lane ... slow down ... turn a little faster ... pay attention to your surroundings, Luke."
After his "turn" was over, I peeled my fingernails from the dashboard, said, "Great job, honey" ... and then I smiled, rolled my eyes and gave my husband that "help me Jesus" look.
That's when it hit me ...
My life as a Christian is often like a teenager with her permit. I am so focused on what is right in front of me that I am missing my "surroundings." I am so busy working on the immediate projects, I don't always see who's in the left lane, who's in my rearview mirror and what intersections I am coming up to. I am sure the Lord has said many times, "Slow down honey, pay attention to your surroundings ... stay in your lane, you're drifting ... ." My prayer for the new year has been simple: "Father, help me to see my surroundings in a fresh way. I don't want to be so focused on the car in front of me that I miss all the other cool things You are doing all around me ... and all the wonderful people and opportunities you have placed in my life. In Jesus Name. Amen!"
Thank you, Luke. Oh by the way ... Luke now drives with his father.
